Day trip to Calais

We are taking our children (10 %26amp; 12)for a day trip to Calais next week, thanks to a fab offer from P%26amp;O. We will undoubtedly do a bit of shopping for cheese, wine etc and will have a good lunch somewhere, but does anyone have any pointers to what else we should do?

It would be a shame to miss something fun for the kids, or a must see pretty town. We dont mind driving out of Calais for a bit.

What about restaurants? Does anyone have a good recomendation?

How much time do you have in Calais?

Calais has a fort that you might want to visit, also go and have a look at the Town Hall (Hotel de Ville) which has a mad kind of flemish architecture, and THE statue of the Burghers of Calais by Rodin in front.

These two good websites might be of use to you:

the second website I have given you, has fantastic information on many small towns and villages close to Calais.

The Fort is called Fort Nieulay:

Restaurant wise, no trip to Calais for ME is complete without stopping at a particular Cafe, in one of the main shopping streets - I always recognise it by the fact that it has a large clock built into the frontage.

This place does fantastic Croque Monsieur (with frites!) and a nice beer or wine. It is a good place for people watching if you sit outside on a nice sunny day:

I THINK it is the Cafe de Paris - but everytime I look at their website, I don%26#39;t recognise it!!! Anyway, with it%26#39;s clock, it%26#39;s pretty obvious, just walk down the road from the Hotel de Ville!!

anyway, here%26#39;s another useful website:

enjoy your day!

Thank you very much for those links. I will take a look at them all today. With only 12 hours or so in Calais to fill I am sure we will how have plenty to do.
