how long in Strasbourg and region?

Hi, after a visit to friends in Switzerland, we want to take an extra week and not drive too far -- Strasbourg has always sounded interesting. If we were to take a week driving north from Basel in CH, is there enough to see/do? We have children, so wine tasting in Alsace Lorraine would be fun for one afternoon, but can%26#39;t be the highlight of the tour for us. We think we can fly back out of Frankfurt -- anything interesting to see on the way there?

Many thanks

It would make a really nice trip. Just outside Freiburg there is Europapark a Disney style theme park

The wine route has a lot of prettty medieval villages all along it, Eguisheim is one of my favourites.

You can go up the Vosges mountains and have day walking around the countryside, maybe swimming in some of the lakes.

In the Black Forest you should visit a spa town and have an afternoon in one of the thermal pools. These are good fun even for kids as they have whirlpools, waterfalls etc. The best known is Caracalla in Baden Baden

There are lot%26#39;s of others though (most towns with %26quot;bad%26quot; in the name have one.

There are plenty of castles to visit especially in Germany but here%26#39;s a nice French one (vive La France!)

Also the towns along the way are nice to visit, Colmar is pretty and you can take a little tourist train around it that the kids might like and a boat ride round the canals. From Strasbourg you can have a tour on the river.

Hope this helps

In Mulhouse, there are some really good museums - not as boring as it sounds, especially the car museum www.collection-schlumpf.com/en/schlumpf/ which we%26#39;ve been to, and the train museum http://www.citedutrain.com/en/train/ which we haven%26#39;t.

Colmar was the hometown of Bartholdi, the creator of the Statue of Liberty www.ot-colmar.fr/index.php… so that might appeal for a short cultural moment?

I second a visit to Haut Koenigsburg with children, also a drive along the Route des Crêtes, which was built as a military supply route, just below the summit crest, so there are excellent views. Of more interest to children are some summer toboggan runs (luge d%26#39;été) ... from experience, make sure they know how to put the brakes on before letting them loose on their own (instructions were in French only). There is one at the Schlucht and another near one of the Ballons. Ours also liked the stork centre at Hunawihr, and we went over the Vosges to Gérardmer, where there is a very pleasant lake with boat trips, pedalos, etc, surrounded by wooded hills. If the children want to be active, several of the wine villages have signposted walks through the vineyards, with some explanation (mostly in French) of vine cultivation, but there are nice viewpoints as well as the education!

Dear Jon88400 - thank you for this input. I%26#39;ve started researching some of the places you mention and feel very excited about our trip now. Thanks again, this was very helpful, cheers

Thanks Diz. I need to plot out the places you mention on a map and plan our itinerary but it sounds as though you did a great trip with children, and that%26#39;s just what I needed to be sure of. Once I have time to look at this in detail, I may ask more questions about specifics. Meanwhile, thanks again. Much appreciated.
