Husband and I are flying to Geneva in late May. We are considering spending a few days in Chamonix to do some hiking before hitting the Swiss Alps. What is the weather like at this time of year? Will we be able to do some of the big hikes like the one from Plan De Aiguille to Montenvers?
It seems a lot of places close up as this is between seasons. Will we have a hard time finding a place to stay?

Hi --
You may well have difficulty with accommodation. Spring is when a great many places shut down for maintenance to rectify whatever wear and tear the winter weather has left behind.
Go to www.chamonix.com for hotels/chalets and see if anything that appeals to you will be open at the time you%26#39;ll travel. You%26#39;ll have to checkout the individual properties%26#39; web sites, I expect.

It will be quiet but there will still be lots open. It%26#39;s one of my favourite times to go, the valley is so lovely then. Plan De Aiguille to Montenvers....maybe. There might well be some snow on it, but it%26#39;s likely to be accessible. Plenty of lower hikes will be fine though. Lac Blanc will probably be too snowy to hike to easily, but others e.g. La Floria will be fine

It%26#39;s true that some hotels shut, but I wouldn%26#39;t have thought you%26#39;d have much difficulty finding somewhere, plus it%26#39;s cheap then. Try the Eden in Les Praz

or Chambre Neuf in town

The weather in general is very difficult to predict at that time as it can be literally anything from snow to summery sunshine. The snow doesn%26#39;t last long in the valley at this time though. It%26#39;s generally pretty nice.

Like KDK, I%26#39;m thinking of having up to a week in Chamonix (but) in early July. Given the feedback to that Post I assume that by then the accommodation and walking/tramping options will be greater, and the weather more settled.
I%26#39;m also doing some tramping in Switzerland after that, so thought it would be good to limber up in new territory.
Any comment would be appreciated.

We%26#39;ve only been in late August, so have no personal experience for early summer, however, the Chamonix website gives details of opening dates for lifts and mountain railways: compagniedumontblanc.fr/pages/horaires_ete_g… - all are scheduled to open from 27th June at the latest. No guarantee of weather, or of the state of the paths, of course, but it%26#39;s an indication that they are expected to be fully accessible from then.

The weaather in late May June and July can be really nice or raining. However, late May is fine for finding hotels etc.
The hiking is great whenever in summer as long as the rain keeps off.

Thanks for the feedback. I think we%26#39;re all copping changing weather conditions, so it%26#39;s a case of just going for it!

Lovely time of year, late May and June. Plenty of hotels open...limited lifts. Plenty of hiking but you will still find snow on some of the higher trails. The Plan d%26#39;aiguille to Montenvers is on the north facing side of the valley and stays snowy for longer, but you will find plenty of walks either lower down or on the Brevent/Flegere side of the valley.
