Trip from Rome to Lourdes by train or bus

I will be in Rome in August and would like to take a train trip Rome to Lourdes and return for two days or a weekender. Can someone help me.

Lourdes as in France?

That%26#39;s got to be a 12+ hr drive and it%26#39;s likely to be a 24 hr+ trip by train (with multiple connections): see http://www.eurorailways.com/timetable.

Flying would be the only realistic alternative, in my opinion - especially if you%26#39;re only going to be there for a couple of days. Try http://flights.traveleurope.com for your dates and see what it costs.

The distance by road is coming on for 900 miles, and would take about 13 hours to drive, using the motorways.

Train trip would be much slower, as there is no direct route.

Quite right! Rome to Lourdes is nearly 900 miles and 13 - 14 hours drive.

(By comparison it%26#39;s only a little more than the drive from Hagerstown MD to Memphis, Tennessee and that%26#39;s not something I would imagine is undertaken lightly.)

The fastest train journey I found is 21hrs 24 minutes with 5 changes of train en route.

My thought would be to fly from Rome to Toulouse (if there are no direct flights to Lourdes, which I doubt) then take a train for the remaining two hour ride to Lourdes. That would still take most of a day, what with getting to and from airports, check-in times etc.
