Louvre

I am going to Paris next month and want to visit the Louvre. I intend to spend about 8 hours at the museum though I know even this is not enough to see everything. Can anyone recommend some must sees? I should probable tell you that I am more interested in %26#39;artifacts%26#39; than paintings.

Thank you.

Hi;

You are correct even 8 hours is not enough, but 8 hours at one time? I salute your stamina. Most people can take about 3 hours before their eyes glaze over and they stop absorbing things.

Let me suggest that you consider going early on a Wednesday or Friday when the Louvre is open late, until 10pm.

You can have a good morning roaming take a break for lunch and something else then return later in the day and into the evening...

As far as what to see, well, it all depends on interests.

The Louvre website www.louvre.fr

has a database accessible online to help locate collections.

So many people when visiting the Louvre head directly to the Denon wing where the Mona Lisa is located.

If it%26#39;s Objects d%26#39;Art you seek you might want to head to the Richelieu wing through the French sculpture of the 17th, 18th and 19th century to the 1st floor for the collection of items from the middle ages through the Renaissance, 17th century, and the apartments of Napoleon III...

But do have a look at the louvre website. it is truly amazing the information they have online there...

Hi! I too think that 8 hours at the Louvre are a bit too much: I too love art, but I stayed here 6 hours at best...which are really enough!

Top departments to see at the Louvre Museum are surely these:

1) The Egyptian art department: here there are the most of the loots of Napaleon from his Egyptian campaign: there are huge statues, element of temples, sarcophaguses, but also objects from the every-day life.

2) The Greek, Roman and Etruscan art departments: any word can describe the wonders that you%26#39;ll find here...go and see!

3) The hall with the the private collections and treasures belonged to Napoleon III and the Empress Eugenie;

4) The Italian art department: admire masterpieces such as the %26quot;Virgin of the Rocks%26quot; and %26quot;Saint John the Baptist%26quot; (even more beautiful than Monna Lisa), and many works by Titian, Caravaggio, Raphael, Giotto, Paolo Uccello, Mantegna and many other masters of the Renaissance Age;

5) The hall of the Great French Pictures: here there are the masterpieces of the Romantic French artists such as Gericault, David and Delacroix;

6) The department of the Middle-Eastern art: unfortunately I haven%26#39;t visited this area of the museum, but here there are great archaeological works of art from Babylon, Persepolis and other important areas of the Middle-East.

I wish you a wonderful experience!
