Using the power of Trip Advisor my wife selected the Hotel du Cadran (rue cler). We booked. Went to the local library this weekend and took out a ton of Paris travel guides. Turns out this hotel is listed in the Rick Steves Paris guide.
I have been lurking on the Paris forum for a while and couldn%26#39;t help but note the disgust for all things %26quot;Steves%26quot;.
My question is, has this hotel been %26quot;Stevised?%26quot; By that I mean, service decreased? cleanliness not up to snuff..etc...I did notice some of the reviewers had recent join/post dates.
I should point out that this is our first trip to Paris. Being a tourist, we dont mind being in a tourist area and in fact wouldn%26#39;t mind running into somebody from home every now and then.
Your thoughts on this hotel?
Thanks

If this is the hotel I believe it is, it is pretty bare bones. Rick is known for his frugality above all else, so this will probably be evident. I don%26#39;t know about %26quot;Steveised%26quot;....
There are a bunch of nice hotels in that area that are relatively inexpensive:
Hôtel de Varenne
Hotel le Relais Bosquet
Hotel du Champ de Mars (budget)
Hotel Latour-Maubourg
Hotel le Tourville
Hotel Muguet

Thanks Les,
When you say bare bones, what does that mean...could mean different things.

I think much of the criticism directed at Rick Steves and his followers are that many of those people will only ever stay in a hotel that he recommends, they will only eat at his restaurants and only see the sights that he tells them too. His books are also written for the US market and some of his comments aren%26#39;t appreciated by non Americans.
Last January while we were in Paris I found a Rick Steves guide book in our apartment. It was the first time I had seen one and was able to see what all the fuss was about.
One day we came across a restaurant where the name seemed familiar. It looked nice, the menu was what we wanted and so we ate there. It was nothing special but was what we needed at the time. Later I realised it had been one of Rick%26#39;s recomendations. I would never have gone there simply on a guide book suggestion but it all turned out fine anyway.
I know nothing about this particular hotel so I can%26#39;t help you decide but if you like this hotel and the reviews are OK then stay there. I would only change if you find somewhere else that you think is better.
