We will be staying near Selestat in August. Is it practicable to do a return trip to Freiburg in a day? would it be worth it? how would we spend our time? We are intersted in gardens, art etc. If not Freiburg where else would you suggest in Germany?

%26gt;Is it practicable to do a return trip to Freiburg in a day?%26lt;
One way would be 1h by car, but 2:15h by public transport, at least.

Freiburg has a nice old town to stroll about, but re gardens and art it is not that great. Baden-Baden is a more suitable place for this purpose, esp. the gardens, as you know already:-)

I would also consider a trip to Basel in Switzerland. There%26#39;s a great old town and lots of museums, as well. Trains to/from Selestat are running hourly, travel time is 1:25h.

thank you HUWE. I realised shortly after I had asked the same question in DEc when we were waying up going you answered the as well. I guess I%26#39;m having senior moments!
thank you

You%26#39;re welcome, feel free to ask again and enjoy good old Europe!
|||
LOl. It%26#39;s the old we come for! Nothing in Christchurch is pre 1850! Even the little pre-european stuff out of Christchurch is not that much older!
Anyway, we have a night in Baden-baden, 5 nights in Alsace and a day to Basel and back!

hi NZMike57 - I hope you don%26#39;t mind my asking, but i see that you are spending time in Alsace and wondered if you could share some ideas with me? We%26#39;re driving from Basel for a one week family vacation, with Strasbourg as one destination but looking for advice on other things to see/do. Flying out of Frankfurt at the end. Many thanks

We had 4 nights in a small B%26amp;B, Ambiance Jardin in DIEBOLSHEIM in 2008. Itwas wonderful. It is between strasbourg and Colmar. While Diebolsheim is quite a small village it%26#39;s made up of authentic alsation buildings and is quite central to Selestat, Kayserberg.abbe d St OldieKoenigsbourg Castle, Riguewihr,colmar and even Strasbourg. The B7B itself was exceptionally charming with propieter Pierrette extremly helpful and enthusiastic in giving the information. the there was the wine! they have this desert Guyvertztramminer. (ok, no spell check on T/A) The people were friendly. You can get buy with English but if you make an effort with French it%26#39;s even better. Most of the people we met were fluent in a few languages, almost always german. we liked it so much we are going back, and we don%26#39;t usually go back anywhere. This time we will base ourselves there and cross to Germany, or basel which is less than 2 hours away. the B7B is really woth a visit itself. It%26#39;s quite special

hi NZMike
Thank you for the response and a lead on where to stay. It sounds very nice and better, I think, than staying in Strasbourg. I%26#39;ll get in touch to see if the B%26amp;B can accommodate us. It seems that there is a lot to see without too much driving. Thanks again.

As the ozzies would say, %26quot;No worries%26quot;. Try www.ambiance-jardin.com

Hi NZMike,
I saw Huwe recommended some gardens to you. You might be interested in this place, the highest garden in France I think. It only needs around 1 hr to go round then you have the rest of the drive along the top of the mountains.

Thank you Jon. It does look like a particular interest of ours.
