We will have 2-3 nights to spend on the Riviera this March and would like to find a romantic place, preferrably a B%26amp;B outside a major city - a country inn or something. I would like to surprise my husband, because the rest of our trip I am being rather pragmatic, shall we say. TIA

Have a look at Le Hameau, a small inn just down the road from St-Paul-de-Vence. The inn is set in a citrus grove, feels like a tiny village, has a beautiful horizon pool, and is absolutely charming. We found it very romantic. All the rooms are different, and you can see them at the web site:

This is a lovely old village ~ about 30 minutes from Nice airport.
There was a thread last May, which discusses Valbonne%26#39;s charms and also accomodations.
Do a search for the thread titled %26quot;I%26#39;m coming to see you!%26quot; posted by %26quot;vickisfloyd%26quot;. (95:42 PM May 19 2008)
I%26#39;m sorry but I don%26#39;t know how to post the link to it.

Valbonne is also very nice, although I%26#39;d describe it more as a small town than a village. Both Opio and Châteauneuf-de-Grasse might suit, however.

We%26#39;re staying here in Eze Village in early July. It looks totally romantic to me, and off the beaten path. 120euro too, a decent price for the area...

Hope this helps!

The suggestions for both a St. Paul de Vence or Eze location are excellent. Visit the sites here for travelers%26#39; comments about their visits to either location, and search this site for recommendations on places to stay. St. Paul and Eze are both lovely mountaintop villages, and I think they%26#39;re what you are looking for.
If you won%26#39;t have a car (driving can be rather treacherous through the Cote d%26#39;Azur!), I, and others, can help you with public transportation, depending upon the location of where you might be traveling from to these destinations.

We stayed right in St Paul de Vence in high season one year and found it virtually emptied and closed at night. Our small hotel, one of about 3 within the walls, didn%26#39;t open its dining room. The more expensive one did and La Colombe d%26#39;Or was also open but it still remained that the village was virtually empty of people at night and there was nowhere to go for say a drink or a coffee, a problem we have found with a few villages that rely heavily on tourists.
A resort type place may serve, or a slightly larger town.
