We are traveling to Paris in June of 09. We are looking at staying on the left bank. There are many options for accomodations to choose from. Can anyone recommend a good place that is under $150 US per night? Hotels that have been recommended by friends are %26quot;Hotel College de France%26quot;, %26quot;Hotel Del Esperance%26quot;, %26quot;Hotel Eiffel%26quot;, %26quot;Hotel Ecoles%26quot;.

I suggest you first transfer your USD in Euros, easier to search when using the local currency.
Hotel du Collège de France is quite nice, a bit old according to US standards but very clean and quite OK IMO. We had Room 503 that has a balcony (double room) Superior rooms are on 6th floor and are larger of course.
Hurry up their rooms go fast as it has a very good reputation.
Very nice location, close to Métro Cluny Sorbonnes (corner of St-Michel and St-Germain).
Try La Sirena, Italian restaurant close by on St-Germain (I like their Spaghetti carbonara and Wifey loves their pizza)

As suggested, it would be a good idea if you tried to think in terms of €uros...rather than US dollars...since most hotel rates and other prices will usually be expressed in €uros. To assist with the process, try printing out €uro-to-US dollar and US dollar-to-€uro conversion %26#39;..Cheat Sheets..%26#39;

Your proposed $150 price range equates roughly to 115€
Check out these good little well-located and situated Left Bank 2-stars (among others) in the upper-5eme--Latin Quarter and upper-6eme-Saint Germain des Prés that are within or around your price range (in checking Rates/Tarifs...also check for any on-line discounted rates, special, promotions)---

Hi Scout--I have looked into the Hotel des Grandes Ecoles--it is in a nice area, but you may have trouble getting a reservation unless you reserve well in advance (like NOW for June). My group is trying to get 10 rooms there in July. I was going to stay there in April when I go with my husband for our anniversary, but we opted for the 2 star Hotel Saint Jacques instead. Even tho it is 2 star it looks great and has good TA reviews--KDK also mentioned it in his/her(?) response with a web address.
Bon voyage!

The popular Hôtels des Grandes Ecoles has a long-standing policy of accepting reservations no more than 90 days/3 months prior to the intended arrival date for the reservations.
You also need to understand that within the Paris hotel rating system, the criteria for %26#39;..stars..%26#39; are predicated on the number of rooms in the hotel and sizes (sq. meters) of room, bathrooms, etc. There is NO criteria for %26#39;..quality..%26#39; within the rating standards. It is entirley possible that by subjective %26#39;standards%26#39;, the %26#39;relative quality%26#39; of an individual, 2-star rated hotel can exceed those of an individual 3-star rated hotel.

Had a quick look at that document, the emphasis seems to be on room size.
The 4* have to have a restaurant and a lift for 2 fl (3 levels) or more.
The 3 or more * have to have a lift for 3 fl (4 levels) or more, people on reception must know at least 2 foreign languages (one of them being English), there must be a minimum of 10 rooms + breakfast can be served in room.
At 2* establishments people on reception are suppused to speak English, there must be a lift for 4 fl (5 levels) or more and there should be at least 7 rooms.
A few more subtleties, but basically that%26#39;s it.

You came to the right place to ask info on the left bank. Check out Fodor%26#39;s Euro page. They have a huge list of left bank hotels and right. Lot%26#39;s of great detail info on those hotels.
