May Day in Nice

Hello, well luckily Air France cancelled our plane flying out April 30 and into Nice on May 1. We were slightly worried about how transportation would work. Now thanks to AF we are arriving on April 30 and so will be in Nice the weekend of May 1. We are wondering if there will be any special events to enjoy? Or is it much like our Labor Day in the USA - not much in the way of community events.

Also - we will be staying on rue Bonaparte. we would like to take bus 98 from the airport and wonder which stop we should take? Do we have to ask the driver or will he make all stops?

One last question - due to this extra day we will be in Nice 9 days. we had previously planned to stay in Nice 7 nights picking up our car the last day to head to Provence. Now we are wondering if we should still stay 7 days in Nice and head out early to stay somewhere on the way - perhaps near moustiers -sainte marie 2 nights. we plan on taking day trips from nice to eze, vence, etc. on public transport. 9 days in Nice too much??

thank you for any opinions.

Oops - forgot to mention that after leaving Nice we will have two weeks in Provence (Villes sur Auzon and St. Remy) and then the train to Paris for the last 4 days.

1 - There is %26quot;La Fête des Mai%26quot;. It%26#39;s a traditional family event held on all Sundays and holidays in May. Music, picnics and traditional dancing brighten up the gardens and the Amphitheatre of Cimiez. But I%26#39;m not sure it will be very interesting for you. Apart from that, I don%26#39;t think there is any interesting special events on May 1. Buy all you need on April 30 because everything (literally!) will be closed on May 1.

2 - Download the PDF bus map (slow):

lignedazur.com/ftp/FR_plan/Nice%20CANCA.pdf

For %26quot;rue Bonaparte%26quot;, you should stop at %26quot;Gare Routière%26quot; ; it%26#39;s the end of the line 98 so the bus will stop for sure.

3.1 - Two days are enough to visit Nice. The countryside is the most interesting part. So you should really leave Nice after 2 days. I%26#39;ve made a list of beautiful towns near Nice. Those towns are grouped by area. Then groups are ordered from the most interesting to the least interesting. In all these towns, the best thing to do is go straight to park your rented car in the closest parking to the old city (vieille ville). Then, visit the old city by foot. In Cannes, the street in front of the sea (La Croisette) is also nice to see.

3.2 -

West of Nice 1:

Gourdon

Tourrettes-sur-Loup

Saint-Paul de Vence

East of Nice:

Coaraze

Eze

Monaco

Sainte-Agnès

Far west of Nice 1:

Moustiers-Sainte-Marie

Gorges du Verdon -%26gt; It%26#39;s not a town, it%26#39;s a beautiful little canyon. When you leave Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, head south toward La Palud-sur-Verdon (road D952) and you will reach it. There are several viewpoints (belvédère) on the road.

West of Nice 2:

Biot

Mougins

Valbonne

Cannes

Far west of Nice 2:

Aix en Provence

3.3 - Check Google Map for pictures of these towns. A Provence travel guide would be perfect to help you decide where to go. Both Lonely Planet and Fodor%26#39;s have a special Provence guide.

It depends what you want to do and see in Nice.

There is a lot just in Nice- museums and art galleries, ancient chucrches, Roman remains , Russian cathedral in the moscow style, botanic gardens, art deco and belle epoche architecture , mediaeval old town, port area , monts aban and Boron . Colline de chateau, various markets, the sea .

Outside of Nice there are lots of places to visit by bus or train - Monaco, Antibes, Villefranche, Cap ferrat, Eze, Vence, St paul de vence, Menton, ventimiglia and San Remo in Italy. Grasse , Cannes, Biot, Levens and Tourettes -Levens, La Turbie, Haut de cagnes

[do antibes and cannes , ventimiglia, and san remo on the train-other by bus costing one euro]

Entrevaux by the train des pignes [unmissable if you have the time] ,

Tende, la brigue, Sospel, Breuil sur Roya by the train des merveilles

iles de lerins -take ferry from cannes or juan les pins [though in summer season there is a boat from Nice ]

On mayday in cimiez is good fun- folk dancers and music, stalls selling traditional Nicois snacks, all in an olive grove - loads of people from Nice will be there picnicking - sometimes events are on inside the roman amphtheatre as well as under the olives.

Thank you Vliavcy and SelkieNice for your input on 10 nights in May.

We do intend to visit places out of Nice by bus or train (thanks for the lists) and do enjoy museums, gardens and cafe sitting. We will most likely not be back in this area so would like to do day trips to Menton, St. Paul de Vence, Eze, Antibes, etc. Seems like that will nicely fill in 9 days.

Re May Day - the Cimiez gathering sounds like a perfect introduction to Nice. And thanks for the tip on buying provisions before the closures on May Day.
