We are looking to rent a house for 8 somewhere in Provence in late July/early August. We know we%26#39;ll probably have some hot weather to deal with, but what about mosquitos? If we went higher up in elevation could it be cooler at night and a little more bug free? Thanks to you all for your insight.

Hm. I was in St Remy in early June last year and didn%26#39;t notice them at all, for what it%26#39;s worth. I suggest you send a PM to AlpillesGal, who goes to that area in September every year and see what she advises. If you want to visit the Camargue, you%26#39;ll probably need mozzie spray anyway, of course.

Be aware that few houses in Provence have window screens: no idea why. But you will often find little containers of repellant in rooms--sometimes citronella lights

It really does depend upon where you decided to stay - the nearer to shallow slow moving water the more mosquitoes.

Saint Rèmy is in north part of the regionial park of the chain of the Alpilles, and as such does not have very many mosquitos especially in July/August which are characteristically dry months. Nevertheless there are indeed a number of good quality vacation rentals %26#39;locations saisonnaires%26#39; around St. Rémy that DO have mosquito screens in the bedrooms, these are invariably sophisticated pull-down blind screens to allow for the opening and closer of the traditional Provençal shutters, that have also served as mosquito screens for centuries!
