From Paris to South of France: tips on cost of food, etc.

We are a family of 8 adults travelling to france in april 2009. The last time I went to france was 5 years ago- as I recall you can have a decent meal for 12-15 Euros per meal. How much is the average cost of a regular meal nowadays? Sundries? How much should we allocate per person per day? Your help is appreciated!

A E15 %26quot;menu%26quot; at a small restaurant would be fairly basic and possibly not very good. You probably generally need to move up to a E20 menu to get reasonable food. That is of course if you want to eat a menu and not just one dish off the %26quot;carte%26quot;.

Apart from accommodation we tend to allow about E120-E150 per couple per day which also includes our car hire, entry fees, petrol and all food etc. We manage pretty well on this with the occasional splurge.

We do tend to a baguette and ham or terrine, soft drink and fruit as a picnic for lunch and carry a small cold bag for this with a knife, small cutting board, salt, corkscrew (of course) and a few plastic disposable cups. We always have wine at dinner, most often local. We also cut costs when renting an apartment by cooking in about half the dinners with food bought at markets or local shops and always self cater for breakfast.

Hope that helps.
