Barcelonnette - Help Please

My girlfriend and I are having a driving holiday through France at the end of March.

The area around the Hautes Alps (particularily around Barcelonnette) seem too good to miss. We would like to stop one night before taking a scenic drive into Italy and down to Monaco.

I would love to hear any advise you could give us about the area.

We like the idea of stopping at Chateau des Magnans at Jausiers, but have heard good and bad reviews.

Thanking you in anticipation.

Hi Mike

I%26#39;m sorry but I haven%26#39;t stayed at Chateau des Magnans so can%26#39;t comment on it. However, I have stayed at Villa Morelia in Jausiers on 2 occassions. The first was in 2005 for 2 nights and we really enjoyed it. The restaurant was beautifully designed and although the owner smoked, the restaurant was absolurely non-smoking which was unusual back in 2005. The food was superb both nights, with a 6 course degustation being served on the Saturday night. The second time we stopped there was in 2007 en route to Italy for one night only. There was confusion with our reservation and as there were no other guests ataying, the chef and owners had taken the night off. However, we were given a room in the hotel and went into Barcelonnette to the supermarket and bought cold cuts, fromage and a bottle of champagne and enjoyed a picnic on the hotel terrasse.

The drive from Nice to Jausiers through the Parc Nationale du Mercantour and over the Col de la Bonnette (the highest paved road in Europe) is impressive, although we did it in June and even then there was still some snow on the edge of the road.

There is a large lake SW of Barcelonnette that we drove around - it took 4-5 hours and was very scenic.

The road from Jausiers to Cuneo in Italy is also very scenic

Dear wigwam

Thank you very much for your advise. The Villa Morelia does indeed look very nice, but a little outside of our budget, so we are going for the Chateau des Magnans.

I%26#39;m certainly looking forward to the drive though. If somebody from New Zealand says it%26#39;s nice it must be lovely!

Many thanks again.
