This will be my first trip to France and I am very confused about the transportation system. The friends I am going with booked a train from Avignon to Paris. We will be staying at an apartment on
St Michel across the street from the Luxembourg Gardens. Will the train we are taking from Avignon go to St Michel Blvd or will we need to switch to the metro once we get in Paris? Thank you to anyone who can help me to understand.

As in all cities, the trains from other places stop in a major station. Usually you have to transfer to bus, metro, or taxi to get to your final destination.
TGV trains from Avignon arrive at Gare de Lyon. Getting from there to Luxembourg Gardens by metro would require a change at Chatelet Les Halles, which I would not recommend if you have luggage. It would be best to take a taxi from Gare de Lyon to your hotel.
Information on Paris public transport is at www.ratp.fr
