Hi there - I want to do a Paris trip with my 9 year old and 5 year old - see the sights, be a tourist etc etc. Where is the best area to stay that is central/metro accesible and also walkable to restaurants etc. I have a reasonable budget and am looking at 4* hotels as an example

Just about anywhere in central Paris meets those requirements. The sights are scattered around central Paris, so there is nowhere close to all of them. Everywhere in central Paris is within about 150 metres of a metro station, and there are nice restaurants everywhere.
Try having a look on www.venere.com for some ideas on hotels.

The above poster is correct, but just to help you narrow it down, St-Germain-des-Prés and the Latin Quarter are nice central areas and you might consider staying near the Luxembourg Garden, especially if you%26#39;ll be there when it gets warmer, a lovely park for children.

I stayed at Hotel La Bourdonnais with my kids when they were just a bit older than your kids. We really liked it there - it was close to the Eiffel Tower so we could go there quite a bit and quite easily. The restaurants in the area provided a nice variety for the kids and a metro stop and Rue Cler were very close as well. Overall it was a nice choice for us.

What about renting an apartment? Little more room and you can get one with a separate bedroom. easier to keep snack food and even breakfast for kiddies

An apartment near a nice park - like the Jardin du Luxembourg - is likely to be a good bet. Or on the Ile de la Cite....

A nice 4* hotel near the Luxembourg Garden is also likely to be a good bet.
It depends on what you want more, maid service, a concierge and the security of a hotel, as opposed to more space and a kitchen.

Thank you everyone - will have a look and let you know how I get on

I%26#39;d like to suggest an %26quot;aparthotel%26quot; like the Citadines chain. Having a kitchen is pretty handy when traveling with young children. We%26#39;ve stayed in all but one of the Paris properties and can recommend three of them:
Citadines Paris Louvre, Citadines Paris Opéra Vendôme, and Citadines Paris Saint-Germain-des-Prés.
These are in excellent locations and all close to the métro and/or RER. http://tinyurl.com/cwydz8
Regarding the Luxembourg gardens area, be aware that the neighborhoods around the gardens, particularly to the east, are served by only one RER station and buses. The nearest métro station is a long walk away and the RER is often packed during commute hours. I do agree that it%26#39;s a great park for kids but it%26#39;s not the best spot from a transportation standpoint.

I just had a further question about the metro situation. We are staying in an apartment on Rue Vavin near Luxembourg Gardens, and it appears that the Vavin and Notre Dame des Champs metro stations are both nearby. Is there really a difficulty with transportation in this area?

With 2 metro stations near by + a few buses, I doubt you%26#39;ll have difficulty.
When choosing accommodation, if you%26#39;re planning on using the metro, always check how close you%26#39;ll be to the nearest metro station.
