My husband, brother-in-law and I will be traveling to paris in late March and would like to take a day trip to the Alsace region. Can anyone suggest a rough itinerary that would allow us to see some interesting villages/countryside and also spend some time in the Vosges? Is is possible to do both in one day? Thanks in advance for your help!

Tough in one day. Paris to Strasbourg by the TGV is 2 1/2 hours and it%26#39;s perfectly possible to see this city on a day trip.
To go further you need to hire a car. You could drive along the Route de Vin through all the little villages, stop at a couple (eg Riquewihr and Eguisheim) then visit Colmar and return to Strasbourg but this needs 4-5 hours in my opinion. To get in to the Vosges you need 45 minutes from Colmar up to the Col de La Schlucht, where hopefully there will still be plenty of snow at the end of March. Unfortunately this means the route des Cretes along the top of the mountains will still be shut, but you could visit Gerardmer to see the lake (although it%26#39;s not at it%26#39;s best without the flowers, boats etc). This means 7-8 hours without seeing Strasbourg. Really it%26#39;s a 2 day trip - see Strasbourg on day one and then the rest on the second day before getting the train back to Paris.
In a day trip my advice would be to cut out the Vosges and the countryside and visit Strasbourg and Colmar. Colmar is 30 minutes by train from Strasbourg and you can look around it in 2 hours, but this won%26#39;t leave time to visit museums etc. This takes up half a day and leaves the rest to tour Strasbourg before getting the TGV back to Paris. Being a bit quick it means you more or less tour round and look at the architecture rather than visit museums, but this is still very pretty.

Thanks so much for the information. We have already booked our accomodation during our whole six night stay in Paris, so staying overnight in Alsace isn%26#39;t really an option, unfortunately.
My biggest thing is that I want to see some beautiful contryside and villages. Can anyone suggest a more do-able day trip from Paris that might fit the bill?

You could try Normandy - I don%26#39;t know the area very well but it%26#39;s closer to Paris and I know Honfleur is extremely pretty and the rest of the Cote Fleurie has a nice reputation. Maybe ask the same question in the Normandy forum.
