Half Board

Can someone tell me what %26quot;half board%26quot; means at a hotel in France? Thanks. I asked for a room at Hotel L%26#39;esplanade in Domme and they offered me a room on the first floor and quoted me one price but also a price for %26quot;half board%26quot;. Also, any comments on that hotel would be appreciated. Thanks.

%26quot;Half board%26quot; means that the price includes breakfast and an evening meal. In general, this is not a good idea: you have to take your evening meal at the hotel, even though there may be interesting restaurants nearby, and often your choice at the hotel is restricted to the cheapest fixed-price menu.

In most cases it means breakfast and another meal, which might be lunch or dinner, if they offer both. The price is usually quoted per person, as well, rather than per room so you need to do your sums.

It can be good value at times and some people like it. It sort of makes the hotel a bit more like a traditional holiday boarding house, but it does cut down your options for choosing other places to eat in town. You seem to have to choose one or the other for the whole stay, not half board one night, room rate the next, so if you eat out one night you still have to pay the half board.
