Barging in France

Could someone help us decide which region in france would be the best for our first barge trip. We have two options: the Canal du Midi or Provence and the Camargue. Our interests are in food, wine, visiting chateau%26#39;s, neat towns or villages. If anyone has experience barging in both area%26#39;s, I would appreciate knowing which you preferred and why.

Thank you!

Are you referencing barges driven by yourself or as part of a package traveling with others (commercial barges)?

In either event, among the choices you present I recommend the Canal du Midi, specifically between Bram and Béziers. This area has various towns to visit (including Carcassonne), wineries, and excursion (such as to Minerve from Homps).

There really are no canals in Provence unless you include the Canal du Rhone a Sete through the Camargue. This is an interesting route and one which I greatly enjoy but there are no châteaux and the countryside is flat and many of the towns are ports along the coast. It might be possible to take a commercial barge along the Rhone maybe from Avignon but I know of no others in Provence.
