Carnet question

When we first entered the metro, we bought a carnet. Although all the machine instructions were in French, and we only speak English, we figured out. We used 4 of the tickets with no trouble that night. The next day, I attempted to use 2 additional tickets - they did not work. In each case, I gave the ticket to the attendant, and he gave me back a working ticket, so no problem there. I%26#39;m just curious as to why they would not have worked. Did we do something wrong while buying the tickets?

Probably you had something magnetic in your pocket, or you went near something magnetic, and that damaged the magnetic stripe on the ticket.

There is nothing you could do when buying the carnet that would cause this.

I%26#39;ve had that happen too. I just tell the attendant and they give me a new ticket.

It%26#39;s difficult to say why your Ticket t%26#39;s failed. As noted above, the most common cause for failure is that the magnetic-strip on the back of a Tickets come in contact with a magnetic field. There are all sorts of possible way this can happen. Most frequently the magnetic field can be magnetic clasps, snaps, closures in a women%26#39;s purse or bag...or some iten within the bag. Men who carry some sort of mini-recording device in a pocket may also experience the same thing. An acquaintance stopped at a shop and purchased several souvenir regrigerator magnets that %26#39;wiped%26#39; the magnetic-strip on her transportation pass Ticket. Sometimes, the magnetic-strip on loose Tickets in pockets or bags can become abraded by other objects. It%26#39;s also possible that out of the gazillion Tickets produced every year, you received a few that were simply defective.

As noted above, the occurence is hardly unusual and Metro/RER ticket agents will usually replace defective Tickets without problem.
