Hi,
With a rental car, is it sensible to cover the above places within 4 to 6 days? Where would be best to stay to visit this area?
We do not mind if the above are just 1 day sightseeing and we spent more days touring Provence - Cote D%26#39;Azur but just do not know the distances between places to set up base camp. Any sueegstions most helpful. We like picturesque towns. What are the must see.
Any auggestions is most appreciated. First time to South France.

I wouldn%26#39;t devote a whole day to cannes unless you are a huge fan of the film festival or if you decide to take a ferry to the Iles de Lerins
Nice and cannes are very close- Nice is the best base for cannes, Antibes, Monaco, Eze, St paul de vence etc
Marseille is a 2 hours minimum drive

Much appreciate your advice. Would you be able to help advice on where best to set us base camp if we want to visit Avignon, Luberon, Gourdon? Would Avignon be a good start for a tour of South France?
Does it make sense to set up in Avignon to visit the above places and then move to Nice as a base for visiting Cannes and Eze as you suggested. I am thinking all in all to spent about 5 days in South France before moving on to Rhone Alps.
Any suggestions on a good place to stay for a party of 4?

Lintay - just my opinion, but having a car in Nice is more trouble than it%26#39;s worth. They have great, inexpensive public transportation via bus or train to most of the places you%26#39;d want to see and you won%26#39;t have to worry about parking, fighting traffic, or finding your way. Plus, it%26#39;s much less expensive.
Nice is a great place to stay as a home base. I haven%26#39;t been to Cannes or Marseilles, mostly because of the advice on this forum telling me they%26#39;re not worth the trip. I have been to Eze, Monaco, Villefranche, Villa Ephrussi, St. Paul de Vence, and Cimiez - all from Nice via bus, and all fabulous (well, Monaco is so-so).

Splitting the trip between Avignon and Nice and staying a couple of nights in each place would make sense to me.
Nice has really good public transport links so a car isn%26#39;t really necessary since finding a parking space is difficult . Make sure wherever you stay has its own parking if you have a rental car

I lived in this area for 15 years then returned there as often as possible for the next 15 from Paris where I moved to. Basically, anywhere is good. My personnal preference would be staying in Cassis, a small fisherman village (but obviously with Mediterranean coast commercial-ness, but rather low low key compared to many other places) where fishermen still sell their catch on the port if you are up early enough. Visiting the Calanques (fjord like formations) is A MUST. Just key that into any browser to find information and images on Cassis, les calanques.
By car Cassis-Avignon is 1 1/2 h. Monaco 2h Barcelona 5h. Basically this means you can do a day trip to anywhere with a few hours of driving! Not quite like Singapore, but definitely not the US either!!! The highway access is very practical from Cassis, 10 to 15 mn depending on where you stay.
Picturesque villages abund but a few are: Moustiers-Saint-Marie with it%26#39;s star strung by a crusader knight on a chain between 2 mountains and its wonderful several centuries old tradition of faience (eartenware), Gordes, Les Baux de Provence, not quite a villages but marvelous Avignon, Aix-en-Provence, even venturing a little into the southwest to see Carcassone%26#39;s Citadel (breathtaking medieval fortified city)...the list is very long long long and any guide will give you a huge choice you just have to pick an itinerary... Mapquest has a European version that will give you general transit times. As you can tell, I could go on forever! Provencal at heart!

Thanks for your email. Will be reviewing our trip plan based on your input and further reading from TA. I will be posting more in days to come as I have yet to add the Rhone-Alps leg of the trip. Thinking along the line of Lyon, Annecy and Grenoble. Wondering if we could do a day trip out to any of the ski resorts. Not sure if its worthwhile given that this will happen 1st week of May.

it would be good to have an idea of what sort of things you like doing and visiting, for example if you are very keen on Roman ruins, then Arles would be a good base for you in western Provence, if you want to visit markets, we can advise you about which markets are on which day, if you want to go for long walks, you might like the Luberon or the Alpilles areas.
