Airport to Hotel Concorde La Fayette

I will be staying at Hotel Concorde La Fayette

3 Place Du General Koenig in April. Is public transportation an option for getting to the hotel from the airport? If so, what is the best way?

|||

The hotel%26#39;s web site has detailed directions on how to get there: see concorde-lafayette.com/en/…directions.aspx

Google is your friend!

|||

Yeah, the Air France bus to Porte Maillot would be very easy. The hotel link above says the bus stops at the hotel. You can buy the AF ticket from the bus driver - your bags get stowed under the bus.

|||

How embarrassing. I guess I should have checked the hotel website first. This will be our first trip to Paris. I guess we%26#39;re just a bit nervous about navigating without speaking the language.

Choice of Hotel

We are staying 5 nights in Paris in August, 09. We can afford to stay in a standard room only at The Hotel des Grands Homme or a superior at the Hotel Du Pantheron. Can anyone advise the best choice. Standard at one hotel or superior the other?

Thank you.

|||

They seem to be right next door to each other at the Place du Panthéon.

So it%26#39;s not a choice between location and, apparently, they are part of the same chain (ie: Hotel Sorbonne - Hotel Jardin Odeon - Hotel Eiffel Park - Hotel Ferrandi - Hotel Pantheon).

I would suggest that, with the global %26quot;financial crisis%26quot; in full swing, you:

1) Book a room at a price you%26#39;re happy to pay, but which you can cancel; and

2) Contact the hotels and ask them to give you their best deal on a non-refundable basis.

Remember - the $AUD is fetching less than €0.50 at the moment, so price is going to be important...

|||

Ella, Thank you for your prompt response. I will keep your adivce is mind when booking.

Thanks.

Lynette

|||

I stayed at HOtel des Grand Hommes this past summer. It was very nice. Room is small. Hotel Pantheon is next door and is also very nice. I would book either hotel in a heartbeat. I would save money though and book smaller/cheaper room, but if difference is not much , or important then book bigger room. You can%26#39;t go wrong with either.

Car Parking on Grand Prix Day

G%26#39;day,

I will soon be driving around Europe and I will also be going to see the Monaco GP on race day. I hear the best way to get into Monaco is by taking a train from Nice. Due to budget and availability I won%26#39;t be staying in Nice over this weekend, but since I have wheels I was thinking of parking up in Nice for the day and taking the train into Monaco.

Would really appreciate it if anyone has any idea on parking availibilty in Nice during this time, is it likely I will find some? I have also researched and found that I may be able to pre book a car park like Parc Thiers on

http://www.interparking-france.com

Does anyone think this is a good way to go??

Any tips/advice is appreciated, thank you

|||

I%26#39;ve never done this, but I%26#39;d expect that if you can pre-book a parking space on the day of the race, it would be a good idea. Anything to make your experience smooth.

|||

We used the Thiers car park a couple of years ago - prebooked online - and we had no problems at all. It%26#39;s also next to the station so very handy for the GP. Trains to Monaco over the race weekend are usually packed but it%26#39;s the best way to get there.

|||

Thankyou for your replies, very much appreciated... and very prompt too!

I will definetely look at pre-booking a car parking space for the day.

Need advice: 8 night 9 day trip to Paris n Switzerland

Hi All,

Am about to finalize the following trip, have a few questions around it.

Trip: May 15 to May 24 for 8 nights/9 days

From Toronto, Canada to Paris and back.

4 nights in Paris

2 nights in Geneva

2 nigths in Zurich

back to Paris and then fly back to Toronto.

So here are the questions:

Is our plan ok, ie 4 nights in Paris etc.

For our trip, should we book a rental car for the whole duration or Get the Eurorail Paris-Switzerland Pass. They both seem to be costing the same.

Being from North America, am very comfortable driving, but am concerned about the petrol/gas prices and parking cost at hotels in the cities.

Have done enough research..but still can%26#39;t decide.

Would really appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks.

|||

Why Paris then Geneva and Zurich? Especially with just 8 nights?

|||

Well, its my first trip to Europe, so I wanna touch a few cities and then airfare to paris is cheaper from Toronto compared to Swiss airports.

So the idea is to split the time between Paris and Switzerland ie 4 nights each...but just have that recurring itch to drive around in europe instead of taking the train.

The thing is the Paris forum has advised against seeing Paris by car so am really undecided if I should travel by car or public tranit.

Being american/canadian I really prefer the travel by car especially because of the potential sightseeing I may get along the way.

So in final..

Should I travel Paris and Switzerland by Car or Train?

Any thoughts/tips.

Thanks.

|||

Hi CoolToronto

You definitely will not want a car in Paris, so you will only have 4 nights with a car so I wouldn%26#39;t worry about the parking cost.

It%26#39;s only a 5 hour drive from Paris to Geneva direct and another 3 hours to Zurich so it%26#39;s not a major drive. Then a 6 hour drive back from Zurich to Paris. Given that you have a desire to drive around a bit of Europe, then hire a car for 4 days.

I would plan on spending 8 hours getting to Geneva and take the A6 south-east out of Paris, get off and take a walk around Auxerre, back roads down to Beaune for another stroll, then back onto the A6 down to Macon and onto the A40 to Geneva. That will give you 2 nights and a whole day in Geneva. Take the A1 to Zurich with the option of a detour through Lausanne and Bern en route, for 2 nights and a Whole day in Zurich.

Be aware that to drive on the A1 (Toll road) in Switzerland you will need to purchase a Vignette to place on the windscreen. They are available at the borders, gas stations and post offices for chf40.00.

Personally, unless I had a compelling reason to visit Geneva and Zurich, I%26#39;d get a car and spend the 4 days driving west into the Loire Valley or east to Troyes and Strasbourg.

In any event, rent a car for the 4 days and have a good trip.

|||

OK, kinda get your logic.

In which case, I%26#39;d reiterate the previous poster%26#39;s advice: rent a car after you%26#39;re time in Paris. Given the small amount of time you%26#39;ve got, the flexibility of a car will way out weigh any cost differential with the train...

|||

Many thanks for the suggestions Wigwam and Ella, much appreciated, since I%26#39;m researching the options....any thoughts on buying the France-Switzerland Eurail Pass compared to renting car in Switzerland for 4 days...any major advantages of the Eurail pass over the rental car?

|||

I am not sure why you want to get to Switzerland but as you say it is your fist trip to Europe, and you have only 8 days, if I were you I woudn%26#39;t spend that time in Geneva and Zurich. It is a personal opinion, but Geneva and Zurich have not much to offer compared to...let%26#39;s say London or Amsterdam or any city in Italy!

|||

What were you hoping to see in Geneva and Zurich? I%26#39;d think most tourists visiting Switzerland go primarily for the scenery, not the towns. The area round Interlaken is very popular - the Jungfrau railway through the Eiger, the Schilthorn cablecar (famous for a Bond film stunt), Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald, etc, jungfraubahn.ch/en/… There%26#39;s also Zermatt/the Matterhorn or the area round Lake Luzern. Ask on the Switzerland forum, but I believe these are all areas with excellent public transport where a car is a liability rather than an asset. Swiss railways do some useful transport passes.

|||

If you intend to drive on the autoroutes (motorways) in Switzerland, you must buy a vignette sticker that costs 40 Swiss franks. You can get them at the border.

Transport from France to Italy

I am planning a two weeks trip in June that includes France and Italy. Plan to visit

1)France: Paris, avignon, nice

2) Italy: Rome, Venice, Florence

Can anyone provide some suggestion as the best way to travel flight, car or train? I don%26#39;t mind paying abit more if it really save alot of time. Although flights can be cheap, but taking taxi and waiting in immigration can be time consuming and expansive.

and suggestion which order is most efficient?

I see some Contiki tour travel through Paris, Venice and Florence and other places. Could anyone share their experience and why they decide to join the tour instead of travelling alone? and was it worth it?

Appreciate any opinions.

ALL HELP %26gt;%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;THANKS IN ADVANCE

|||

I will depend on how much of your own time and effort you%26#39;re willing to put into the research and planning of your trip. Tours are fine for those who simply want to go and don%26#39;t mind others establishing the preferences and priorities of their trip. You simply write the check and show up at the departure point for the bus on-time.

The prospective itinerary you%26#39;ve proposed is %26#39;doable%26#39; but may be a bit rushed in the time available...however you do it--tour, train, car. I%26#39;d be incline to cutting the itinerary to two locataion in France and two locations in Italy (you could add one more destination for one country or the other...but no more. Sometimes LESS is MORE

The itinerary can be done by train. Flying into Paris for a brief stay, then fast TGV to AIX-en-PROVENCE or NICE for a visit. Then onward rail connection to perhap Venice or Florence for another brief stay, then onward high-speed rail connection to a major Italian airport (Rome, Milan) for a flight home (an %26#39;open-jawed%26#39; flight itinerary).

It%26#39;s also possible to %26#39;split%26#39; modes of transfer--train to Aix-en-Provence, pick up a rental car and drive through Provence to Nice...then train to Venice, pick up another rental car and drive to Florence...then facty train to a major airport for the flight home.

Do some research on French and Italian train routes and schedules...to see what might or might not %26#39;work%26#39; for you.

The best on-line source of basic schedule information for research and planning purposes will be the German National Railway web site--

distance from eurostar station and Asnieres

we are coming from London to Paris and our hotel is in Asnieres on bis Rue du Chateau.Any help on how to get there? Thank you for any assistance..........

|||

Probably best to take a taxi from Gare du Nord, the station that Eurostar arrives at, as your hotel is about half a mile from the nearest Métro station (Gabriel Péri, line 13) and only a little closer to the rail station of Asnières-sur-Seine.

I hope you realise that your hotel is actually outside the city of Paris, in the suburb of Asnières-sur-Seine, about 5 miles from Notre Dame and 4 miles from Gare du Nord. It is presumably Hotel Wilson at 10 bis Rue du Château. (The %26quot;bis%26quot; means that it%26#39;s next door to #10, the French way of saying %26quot;10a%26quot;.)

Do you have a particular reason for staying so far out? It%26#39;s not really very convenient for a short tourist visit to Paris, and there are no attractions that I know of in Asnières.

|||

Yes, you are right about the hotel, it seemed to be very good , the reviews were excellent and the distance from transportaton was somewhat minimized. I am not thriled to find we must walk a half a mile to get to the hotel as my hussband is an amputee,with a prothesis. There must be a taxi or other mode of transportation,hopefully. Thank you for the information,we will work out something, I%26#39;m sure. Everything cannot be perfect all the time, you just work around it and be happy for the good things, like getting to go to Paris!!

|||

If your husband is an amputee, can you not change your hotel? To take a taxi from Asnières to Paris will probably cost 40-50 Euros per ride. The metro is very disabled-unfriendly with many stairs and corridors.

|||

Having checked the RATP (Paris transport authority) website for their recommendations, the nearest station is the SNCF (French Railways) station at Asnières-sur-Seine, which they say is 8 minutes%26#39; walk from the hotel. There is a train every 15 minutes to the terminus at Saint-Lazare, from where you would need to take a bus or Métro to wherever you were heading.

Your husband might find the buses easier than the Métro. I assume he can cope with some walking and some steps, but Métro stations often have at least 45 steps between platform and street, with only a few having escalators (and very few with down escalators).

But if you can switch to a more conveniently located hotel in an area where there are plenty of pleasant cafés and restaurants around (which is not the case in Asnières), I recommend that you do so.

|||

I want to thank you both very much for your good advice and your effort to help us. Very kind, you are. My husband is an amputee, but has a prothesis that enables him to walk and climb stairs quite well, but not in great excess. I will look for another hotel closer to the city. Any suggestions?We are not wealthy, and there are three of us, my husband, myself and my 24 yr. old daughter. Thanks again to both gentlemen..............

Hello! I%26#39;m from San Antonio also, going to Paris at the end of May. Regarding your hotel, we will be staying at Hotel Minerve which is in the Latin Quarter in Paris, excellent safe location and very close to transportation. It is not expensive, and was listed as a true Paris treasure in my Frommer%26#39;s %26quot;Paris for Dummies%26quot; book :-)
